Restoring or Remodeling a Mid-Century Modern Eichler Home

Eichler Mid-Century Modern Homes Resurging & So Is Home Restoration. Where do you find the products that stay true to these unique and vintage structures?

Eichler Homes built more than 11,000 homes in nine communities in Northern California and in three communities in Southern California between 1950 and 1964. Northern California Eichler Homes are predominantly in the East Bay towns of Walnut Creek, Concord, Oakland, Castro Valley, the San Francisco Peninsula towns of San Mateo, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and San Jose, as well as San Francisco, Marin County, and Sacramento. Southern California Eichler Homes developments are in Thousand Oaks, Granada Hills, and Orange. The largest Eichler Homes development is 'The Highlands' in San Mateo, built between 1956 and 1964.

During this period, Joseph Eichler became one of the nation's most influential builders of modern homes, today most often referred to as California Modern.  Today, Eichler homes are considered treasures and typically feature glass walls, post-and-beam construction, and open floorplans in a style indebted to Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.  Exteriors have flat or low-sloping A-Framed roofs, 2-inch pattern vertical wood siding, and spartan facades with clean geometric lines. Eichler liked bringing the outside in, with skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass windows with glass transoms looking out on  private outdoor rooms, patios, atriums, gardens, and swimming pools.
