With a single lumberyard and a simple vision, the Dolan family laid the foundation for what would become one of the Bay Area’s most trusted names in building materials. What began as a small, local operation in Pinole, CA has grown into a multi-location business serving homeowners, builders, and contractors with the same care and commitment that started it all.
Family-Owned Since 1958— Built on Dedication, Grit, and a Vision for Something Better
Founder Patrick Eugene Dolan immigrated to the United States at age 21 with a deep drive to succeed. He earned his high school diploma at night, worked multiple jobs, became a U.S. citizen, and proudly served in the National Guard.
In the winter of 1958, Patrick cut and sold Christmas trees, earning $6,000 — the seed money that launched the first Dolan’s lumberyard in Pinole.
As the company grew, P.E. remained hands-on. He visited each lumberyard almost daily and made evening calls to check in on business. When he said, “we sell everything to build anything,” he meant it — even going out of his way to track down hard-to-find items just to meet a customer’s needs.
Patrick was known for his personal touch, warm smile, and unwavering commitment to service. Many remember being greeted with a handshake when they walked into Dolan’s. Even in his later years, he loved answering the store phone and welcoming customers in person — always ready to help.
